Seamed Stockings Hard to Wear
Seamed stockings may have looked very glamorous but they were hugely uncomfortable to
wear and even worse trouble was in keeping the seam straight.
Why should anyone worry about keeping a seam straight? Well, for our younger readers,
perhaps we had better describe what a seam actually was or
is.
A seam in a stocking is where the two sides of a stocking meet and are sewn together
to form a seam. Usually the stocking is comprised of one piece of nylon or silk material sewn up at the seam.
This seam then becomes a slight ridge and this ridge, known as a seam, runs up the back of the stocking which
runs up the back of a woman’s leg.
Yes, it does look sexy to see a seam following a woman’s leg contour up under her
skirt but from the woman’s point of view, it is often problematic. Why?
Firstly, she has to sit on the seam and as you can imagine, sitting on a ridge of
material is not usually very comfortable even if it is only a slight one. Don’t believe me? Try it for
yourself sometime and sit on it for a at least 30 minutes.
Next, when she stands up again, she has to make sure that the seam of the stocking is
running straight up the back of her leg and hasn’t veered off to the side and meandered ‘willy-nilly’ up her
leg. Crooked stockings look funny.
Actually, as a child I can remember a favourite Aunt who could never keep her seams
straight. But this particular day her stockings went from the back of her leg just above her heels and then
right around her leg and up under the front of her skirt above her knees.
Now that really looked funny and it must have been
so uncomfortable for her because she retired to my Mums bedroom just after she got out of the car on arrival at
our place. Then when she emerged from the bedroom, everything was running in the right direction again. But it
was a good snigger for us embarrassed kids!
It was always embarrassing to see someone’s discomfort and seeing a woman whose seams
weren’t straight was always embarrassing. Then when I grew up I found out for myself how hard seamed
stockings were to actually wear.
